Tips for safe driving:

  A simple safety check should be done before driving any vehicle. To enusre all lights are working, turn them on one at a time and walk around the vehicle inspecting not only the headlights but tailights, if possible the brakelights and turn signals as well. Also check that your emergency blinkers are operating properly. Check for fluids that might have come from the car, loose pieces and anything else that would be out of place. Finally check the tires to ensure they have sufficient tread and are inflated properly.

  Upon entering the car, adjust all mirrors and seats before placing the key in the ignition. Adjust the left mirror by placing your head against the left window and moving the mirror so that you can just see the left side of the car. For the right mirror, move your head towards the center of the vehicle and adjust the right mirror the same way. If you are seated correctly in your seat, you will not be able to see your vehicle, but your blind spots will be greatly reduced!

  Always wear your seatbelts and demand your passengers do as well. Studies have shown that people with seatbelts on during a collision have a significantly lower rate of sustaining serious injury.

  Did you know when you drive with your headlights on your car is visible for nearly 4 times the distance even during daytime hours? Driving with your headlights on is a good idea!

  When stopping at a stop sign, come to a COMPLETE stop. Make sure you feel the car rock backward and count three seconds to yourself before proceeding. Remember what you were taught as kid about crossing the street applies to stopping at a stop light. Look to the left, then to the right, then straight ahead, and finally left again before proceeding.

  The same principle you use at a stop light applies to a traffic light. Also, notice all vehicles and ensure that someone else is not going to run the light.

  Always keep your eyes moving. Scan all of your mirrors every 6-8 seconds and be aware of what is around you.

  When driving on a two lane road that allows parking on the right, be aware to stay toward the center line and allow for room in case someone were to open their door to exit their vehicle in front of your car.

  Anticipate other drivers actions and expect them to make mistakes. With your mindset in this mode you will begin to think ahead instead of reacting to a situation. For example, assume that a car coming to a stop sign is going to stop. Anticipate your reaction if he doesn't stop.

  When you re-fuel your vehicle take the opportunity to check your oil and other fluid levels.

  If your car stalls on the road, do not leave your car. Wait for the proper authorities to come to your aid.

  When traveling behind other vehicles observe the 4 second rule. When the car in front of you passes a stationary object, slowly count to four. If you pass the object before the allotted time, you should back off. At night or inclement weather, these times should be doubled.

  Although conveninet, cell phones are a major distraction for drivers. Refrain from talking on the phone while driving and if you must use your cellphone, pull over to a safe, well-lit parking lot and place your call there.

  Always let someone know when you are traveling. Give them your route and expected time of arrival, if possible give them a call once you've arrived to let them know you're there. When traveling over long distance, check in on a regular basis and let your contact know everything is alright.

  When being approached by an emergency vehicle, pull to the right shoulder of the road and STOP. Put on your hazard lights to allow others to see you better.

  You should always have emergency contact information in your vehicle. If you carry a cellphone be sure you have at least one entry titled ICE (In Case of Emergency) with the number being someone who can be easily reached. Always keep a blanket, some water and a first aid kit in the car.

  Leave early, plan to arrive 10 minutes before the appointed time. Speeding does not increase your ability to arrive on time, rather it only increases your chances of not arriving at all.

  When traveling on a multiple lane road, keep in mind that the left most lanes are for passing only. If not actively passing a vehicle, stay in the right lanes, allowing others to pass.

  Make sure you are always in view of a large truck or oversized vehicle. Stay well within their "View Zone" and not in their BLIND ZONE.

  There is an old saying... "If the roads are wet, then drive like it's snowing. If the roads have snow, then drive like they're icy. If the roads are icy, then don't drive."

  In inclement weather, if it is necessary to reduce one's speed, the brake should be applied slowly without making sudden moves. When making sudden moves it's much easier to lose control of your vehicle.

  Remember as your speed increases so does your braking distance. If you double your speed, you quadruple your braking distance. If you double the weight of your vehicle, you double the stopping distance.
